Who doesn’t love fashion week? Irrelevant to those who care, fashion week is one of the most awaited events in the spring/summer and fall/winter seasons which present the latest designers’ collections. Trends are mostly what everybody looks out for. In a world where change happens to be the only permanent thing existing, it is sometimes necessary for some people to go along with what the trends dictate. The only chance to see the newest ‘it’ pieces is through fashion week. See it first live, or watch videos online. With technology’s great developments, it is easy to get a glimpse of what’s in and what’s out during the season.

There was once a sculptor, named Alfred, who having won the large gold medal and obtained a travelling scholarship, went to Italy, and then came back to his native land. He was young at that time- indeed, he is young still, although he is ten years older than he was then. On his return, he went to visit one of the little towns in the island of Zealand. The whole town knew who the stranger was; and one of the richest men in the place gave a party in his honor, and all who were of any consequence, or who possessed some property, were invited. It was quite an event, and all the town knew of it, so that it was not necessary to announce it by beat of drum. Apprentice-boys, children of the poor, and even the poor people themselves, stood before the house, watching the lighted windows; and the watchman might easily fancy he was giving a party also, there were so many people in the streets. There was quite an air of festivity about it, and the house was full of it; for Mr. Alfred, the sculptor, was there. He talked and told anecdotes, and every one listened to him with pleasure, not unmingled with awe; but none felt so much respect for him as did the elderly widow of a naval officer. She seemed, so far as Mr. Alfred was concerned, to be like a piece of fresh blotting-paper that absorbed all he said and asked for more. She was very appreciative, and incredibly ignorant- a kind of female Gaspar Hauser.

“I should like to see Rome,” she said; “it must be a lovely city, or so many foreigners would not be constantly arriving there. Now, do give me a description of Rome. How does the city look when you enter in at the gate?”

What makes a successful fashion film? Is it a strong visual concept? Content that can be quickly parsed? A savvy distribution strategy? Humour? Provocation? A famous model or a catchy soundtrack? Creating compelling fashion videos has always been more art than science. But as we set about compiling our ranking of this season’s best films, we saw some interesting commonalities.

While Cartier’s 3-minute CGI epic “L’Odyssée de Cartier” — which has appeared on network television and earned 14 million views on YouTube in just over a month — is a clear exception, the average length of the most successful films has dropped noticeably from just a few seasons ago. Indeed, several of this season’s top picks, including films from Lanvin, Prada, ASOS, Alexander Wang and Balenciaga, are better attuned to the short attention spans of today’s internet users and last no more than 1.5 minutes, a length that could shrink further in seasons to come.

Annie Leibovitz’s debut solo show in Hong Kong will be held at the Sundaram Tagore Gallery on Hollywood Road. Taking place from May 10 – June 17, the exhibition will explore the theme of power in public and private spheres. Having said that, all we really want to know is how one of the most famous photographers of her generation, the last to shoot John Lennon (pun intended), could have got into such financial difficulty that she had to pawn away her image rights a couple of years ago?

Amira Ahmed: Fashions’ Next Great Face

The breakout model Amira Ahmed is more than just a beautiful face framed by a short, edgy haircut. For the half-Somali, half-Filipino, who surfs the West Coast —  “I love waiting for that special wave” — and hits the Tignes in the French Alps to snowboard between fashion seasons (“simply a must!”), modeling is as much about traveling and maintaining the routine-less lifestyle she knows so well as it is a job.

Born in Stockholm, the 22-year-old grew up on her stepfather’s boat, where, she says “the sea became my playground.” Upon coming ashore, she attended boarding school in Prague, then college in London where she studied international relations.

“It’s natural that I would find work that I could do everywhere,” she says. Now based in Brooklyn, Ms. Ahmed most recently landed campaigns for Gap, AllSaints and L’Oreal.
