While it may have been recently invaded by suburban mall favorits likes the Disney Store, Abercrombie & Fitch and H&M, Fifth Avenue remains New York’s (and one of the world’s) best shopping street. It’s still home to landmark department stores, designer boutiques, and spectacular window displays, especially around Christmas times. Continue reading »

Oscar Carvallo is one of those luxury designers that is capable of carrying the wearer to an entirely different world, and this is elegantly portrayed in his most recent Spring/Summer Couture collection. This mythical line transports onlookers to childhood fairy tales of delightful fantasy lands filled with whimsical characters— and we’re all for it. Continue reading »

A new Etro, as defined by florals and Japanese inspired silhouettes | Photo: Sonny Vandevelde
MILAN, Italy — We tipped our friend Sonny Vandevelde to give us a behind-the-scenes look into the collections in Milan for Spring/Summer 2013. Japan was clearly on the mind, with unmistakable silhouettes and motifs from the island nation appearing in strong outings from Prada and Etro. Versace and Dolce & Gabbana made their seasonal statements in a flurry of prints, textures and covetable accessories, all in the spirit of their house signatures, while Fendi’s stand-out modern colour blocking was the talk of the town.

Mr. Etro, your family’s label is known for its colorful and distinctive designs. Where is this passion for the different coming from?
I have studied African, Islamic, and Medieval history. I’ve made over 25 journeys to Morocco, for example, and I have a great connection to the African continent. I even went to the Senegal Biennale, which is the biggest fashion event in Africa, to present Etro’s collection one year.
