There’s really nothing like having a good coat to get you through the winter season. As great as the rest of your outfit may be most of the time, that jacket will be the only thing people see—you want it to be phenomenal. And we know you’ve put it off for long enough, trying to squeeze a few warm weekends out with just a light sweater (don’t worry so have we), but you can’t deny it. Winter is upon us and you need a coat—immediately. You could always pull last winter’s coat out of the storage or go back to the faithful solid black, but where’s the fun in that? This season there are so many colors, textures and trends in outerwear you’re going to need to build an extension in that walk-in closet just to hold them all! (Not that we’re complaining.) Click through to see several jackets in the best trends of the season.
We’re not sure if Olivia Pope had anything to do with this, but we know a gorgeous trend when we see one. An instantly flattering color, solid white, ivory and cream can add class to any outfit—even if you’re rocking a ‘90s grunge trend underneath.

Opulence is all about textiles, fabrics and prints, it’s not about the bling-bling anymore, everything is in the details. We love a good fabric or texture; it’s a subtle way to make a fashion statement. So if you’re less of a look-at-me dresser and prefer a casual elegance these coats are the perfect way to style this winter.

If you’re bored with the same black and camel colors that cover coats and jackets season after season after season, then you’re in luck. Color is one of the biggest trends hitting outerwear right now and the brighter the better. Wear sunshine yellows, brilliant reds and feminine purples—forget that it’s freezing out and let your coat be happy and bright.

Alexander McQueen Wave Panel Short Dress Coat.
If you caught any of the runway shows this season you know fur is coming back in a big way. Fendi had it all over everything from coats to jewelry and Prada was rocking it on some of those interesting pieces. What’s best about it is that it’s an absolute investment piece, possibly an heirloom in years to come. And it really doesn’t get any more luxe than fur.
Liska Fox Fur Coat.
Metals are huge this season and we’re so excited. There’s nothing that feels more fun and trendy then bright, bold shine. While it’s definitely a gutsy fashion move it’s perfect for this winter when paired with simple shades and silhouettes. The sheen on these jackets will make a statement on their own.
Burberry Long Eyelet Detail Metallic Leather Trench Coat.
It’s casual and sophistication all in one—and honestly, there’s nothing as comfortable as a cape. It’s basically like walking out the door in a fashionable snuggie. (You scoff, but you know they’re warm and comfy.) From casual to high fashion, capes are as just as eclectic as coats.
Chloé Wool-Blend Cape.
For some reason wrap coats seem to be more chic than any other style; maybe it’s the way they lay or the feminine silhouette they enhance—either way, they’re easily one of our favorites. In calf-gracing lengths these coats are like an outfit all their own.
Max Mara Eliana Coat.
While some of you may be ecstatic over the idea of finding awesome new outerwear, others prefer the classic basics. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it. For those who like to keep things simple, we have a few styles just for you.

With winter comes the rain, and as much as we want to stay indoors near a crackling fire, with hot chocolate and a few romantic comedies, there are times we have to venture out into dreary weather. But hey, is it really that bad if you look fabulous while doing it?
